Pre-Surgical Care

Cherry eye is a common condition that affects the tear producing gland located under the lower eyelid, causing it to prolapse, or bulge outward. The condition is hereditary and can affect various dog breeds as well as a few feline breeds. While cherry eye isn’t life-threatening, it does cause unnecessary discomfort. Fortunately, it can be easily treated by a simple surgical procedure.

Cryosurgery is an innovative surgical modality that uses extreme temperature to essentially “freeze” unwanted skin growths so they can be quickly, easily, and painlessly removed. Cryosurgery is a fast, effective, and economical option which does not require the use of anesthesia or traditional surgical techniques. 

Cystotomy is a common surgical procedure used to address a number of issues with the urinary tract or bladder. The most common reason for a cystotomy is to remove bladder or urethral stones, but it can also be used to diagnose certain conditions. Cystotomy is performed under general anesthesia with very few complications.

Entropion is a common disorder of the eyelids which causes them to roll inward (inverted) causing pain, swelling, and irritation due to the eyelash or other eyelid hair rubbing on the cornea. Entropion can occur in either the upper or lower eyelid, and in one eye or both. If left untreated, it can cause vision issues, up to and including blindness. Gastric dilation volvulus (GDV) also known as “bloat,” “stomach torsion,” or twisted stomach” is a common life-threatening condition that affects many large breed and deep chested dogs but can affect smaller breed dogs due to factors like their anatomy, environment and care. 

Signs of GDV may include:

  • Bloated or distended abdomen
  • Excessive drooling/ profuse saliva
  • Retching/gagging
  • Multiple attempts to vomit without producing anything
  • Restless/pacing/panting/anxious
  • Lethargic
  • Shock/depression

Stenotic nares is a common genetic disorder caused by a malformation of the cartilage in the nose and is a component of brachycephalic syndrome. Because restrictive airway disorders can be progressive and worsen without treatment, your vet may determine that surgical correction is the best option for treating your pet’s stenotic nares. This procedure is often performed as a preventative measure during spaying or neutering.
